Cardiff Diamond Foundry purifies commercial diamond nanopowders as well as fabricating custom diamond nanoparticles from scratch.

The nanoparticles purification facility is based around a high vacuum furnace with the capability of annealing in hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, argon or vacuum at temperatures up to 1200 °C. This chamber also has optical access and can exploit two high power lamps, a 400W Xenon broadband lamp and a 30W Deuterium UV source.

We have a second tube furnace for larger volumes with similar capabilities. We also use this system for standard thermal CVD.

Recently, a high power planetary mill (Pulverisette 7 Premium Line) has been added to the nanoparticle suite. This apparatus allows the milling of bulk diamond films into nanoparticles. Combined with the CVD facilities, the production of custom nanodiamond particles with controlled impurities such as silicon, nitrogen, boron etc is possible.

Dispersal of purified nanodiamond particles can be achieved by a high power ultrasonic probe (Sonics VCX500 500W). We also have a high G refrigerated centrifuge for removing contaminants and large particles.

For particles sizing we hvae a conventional Dynamic Light Scattering apparatus (Malvern Zetasizer Nano ZS with autotitrator) as well as a Nanosight LM10 for Nanoparticle Tracking Analysis.

We are able to measure zeta potential of particles with the above Malvern Zetasizer Nano ZS as well as surfaces, with an Anton Paar SurPASS 3 Electrokinetic analyser. Both offer autotitration.
